How to move your Exchange 2000 server database and log files from one place to another

Communications | Exchange 2000 Server Help

It happens to everyone at least once. Your exchange server fills up and the database is too large to mount anymore. What can you do?!? Well the answer is to move the exchange database and transaction logs to a new partition on the server to free up some space. If you don't have another partition, GET ONE and then follow these directions.

1) To move the transaction logs first unmount the exchange stores if they are not already.

Next, right click on the first storage group and click properties. On the general tab, change the TRANSACTION LOG LOCATION by clicking browse and point it to a new BLANK FILE ON THE NEW PARTITION.

Don't worry about copying the logs to the new location, using this procedure will do this for you.

Moving all those log files could take a while as they are quite large most of the time.

2) Now its time to move the exchange database it self.

In the Exchange System Manager locate the Administrative Group (First Administrative Group) and then right click storage group such mailbox store. Click on the DATABASE tab and click browse to the new location.

Once again, don't bother copying the database by hand; Microsoft exchange server manager will do this for you.

BAM! Now you’re done, remount the store and everything should be good to go!
