Get your sound card working in Debian KDE

Here is some basic instructions on getting your sound card working in kde.

1) Install some software

apt-get install alsa-base alsa-modules-2.4.27-2-386 alsa-oss alsa-source alsamixergui alsaplayer alsaplayer-common alsaplayer-gtk alsaplayer-jack alsaplayer-oss snd-gtk-alsavlc-plugin-alsa alsaplayer-jack jack jackd

2) check your sound card model

lspci

3) restart kde (log out log back in)

4) run the configure program for elsa

alsaconf

5) Save the settings

alsactl store

6) Test the configuration

speaker-test
ctrl + c to stop it

Remember this is basic and may not work in all situations and with all hardware. Worked for me on my dell laptop with the Multimedia audio controller: ESS Technology ES1983S Maestro-3i PCI Audio Accelerator (rev 10)
