I have used a lot of different distro's. SuSE, Fedora, Red Hat, Gentoo, Ubuntu, Knoppix just to name a few. You can also through in a little FreeBSD. They all are great and have their strong and weak points. I think SuSE is for more of your newbie's, it seems to make the move from Windows to Linux pretty easy. Fedora and Gentoo are a little on the "bleeding edge". Although I reeeeeally like Gentoo, once you get it installed it is nice. Ubuntu and Knoppix are good ones as well and are all based on Debian. That is why a while back I made the switch from Gentoo to Debian and I have never looked back. For stability, security, and reliability…it is Debian all the way.
